AG Al-Suood and Ministry of Economic Development allow selling usage of alcohol and pork in the inhabited islands of Maldives.

Attorney General Suood has previously said the Economic Ministry’s decision to lift the age old ban on selling of alcohol in the Maldives inhabited islands of was illegal. There was pressure from the people, the NGO’s and the Islamic Ministry itself against selling of alcohol, when the MDP and Nasheed tried to legalise it few months ago, as it could jeopardise the culture of abstains practised by the population as a whole.
Today according to Haveeru News the Ministry of Economic development, with Endorsement from the rubber stamp Attorney General who is hell-bent on legalising everything illegal to please the President he serves has cut all the red tapes instilled for an alcohol free Maldives in the Maldives.
The Attorney General disregarding the religion is disregarding, the consequences this will have on the Maldivian people, our families and children. Already countries such as the United Kingdom, lament heavily on their drinking cultures as it is a major cause of domestic violence, crimes and also impacts huge on the country’s healthcare service the NHS.
Even though there are offenders with often known criminal histories such as drug abusers attempting to use alcohol in the Maldives, allowing country wide sale of alcohol in the inhabited islands will destroy the Maldives widely enjoyed alcohol free culture. The main reason why we are safe from the grim consequences of drinking among the mainstream population is because it is banned in the inhabited islands. All this could become history from today with the legalisation announced in the Economic Ministry‘s website.
Against the wishes of the people country wide alcohol sale is endorsed by the Attorney General and the Economic development Ministry. There is no need for this as alcohol is already sold for the benefit of the tourism sector and expatriate population in the confinement of resort islands and those who wants to drink always are free to go there. Despite of its illegality those Maldivians who drink also used the option therefore sparing the inhabited islands from the consequences of drinking.
Alcohol sale in the inhabited islands should stay banned as it’s sale will make the situation of uncontrolled violence, gang warfare and other crimes worse.
It is important to oppose this move and the people need to act if they want to stop the nations safety and social conditions deteriorating further. It is widely believed that the MDP and President Nasheed will do anything to save the self interests of their’s and their friends. There were rumours that before moving into the Presidential quarters, Nasheed has moved builders in first to build a seller at Muliaage. Cabinet Ministers as well as President himself has been caught in drunken stupors and ramblings in several public occasions. In one such occasions the President asked the Guards to help him pick mangoes in the middle of the night from a Sabadell tree. Similarly the President unnoticed arrived to an island and made his way out of the posh Presidential sea craft on one shoe. Swaggering without wearing one shoe, he made a spectacle of himself in front of the islanders who came to receive him and also the Bangladeshi workers that gather near the beach to enjoy the sun rise.
