United Nation Secretary General Banki Moon urges the Maldives Leaders to bring an immediate end to the political crisis and violence through dialogue

Series of violent demonstrations held by the ruling party MDP perpetrated by President Nasheed and top officials have compromised the security of the Maldivian people across the country. Political prisoners including the Leader of opposition party PA Abdulla Yamin and Vice Speaker of Majlis Nazim held in detention and solitary confinement are denied access to Lawyers and repeated calls by the Court to present them for their trials has been ignored by the Military.
On Friday the President in his weekly Radio address dictatorially stated that he will keep opposition politicians and MP’s in detention as long as he wants to accusing them of trying to overthrow him.
The President’s very own activists comprising of criminals that he released for the purpose from jail including 40 violent criminals he released few months ago are taking over opposition offices, burning their flags, vandalising their properties, stabbing people outside the residences of opposition MP’s and Judges. Without any intervention by the Military and the Police that are arresting those opposition leaders at gun point and transporting them in armoured vehicles that are used only in wars mean; those outside the MDP regime are scared for their lives.
Outside one of the opposition leader Yamin’s house the victims were stabbed by the state sponsored militia in broad day light.
Secretary General Banki Moon appealed to all politicians and political parties to end resorting to violence to achieve political ends, and not to encourage people to engage in violence. However the violence prone ruling party MDP, the violence prone President Nasheed and their support base are having none of it. They are outside homes of Judges, opposition politicians and opposition MP’s destroying their houses, and belongings. Leader of PA Abdulla Yamin taken and held in solitary confinement without access to lawyers has, his house and his car among other things vandalised and destroyed. Last night Speaker of the Parliament Nazim, his house was attacked shattering the glass in the windows and doors of his house. No action by the Police and the military that are watching these like spectators were taken to prevent the supporters of the President that carried out the attack right in front of their eyes.
The statement Secretary General Banki Moon made, urged all political parties to restrain those who promote violence and confrontation, and to resolve their differences through dialogue”. In addition to that the statement follows, “Political rivalries should not be allowed to jeopardize the significant gains the country has registered in democratic reform. The Secretary-General also urges the Government and all parties to ensure the rule of law is maintained, and to safeguard the rights and protections enshrined in the constitution”.
His appeal is falling onto deaf ears as it was only last Friday; yesterday the President stated on national Radio that he intends to arrest and confine political rivals as long as he wants no matter what the Constitution says; and is still holding them in solitary confinement, without giving them access to Lawyers, while the President’s top officials yesterday said they are adopting their own rules and establishing their own Courts.
We appeal to the international community to stop watching and instead of verbal appeals to take immediate active intervention to end this crisis.
