Amid the Political crisis President Nasheed states that he has no intention of releasing the opposition party leaders and MP’s taken by the Military into solitary confinement per his order

Although the ruling MDP and President Nasheed is teetering in the brink of failure, the President keeps on using violent intimidations, arbitrary arrests and solitary confinement of MP’s and opposition leaders.
It is only few days ago the Supreme Court Judge ordered the release of MP and Leader of PA Abdulla Yamin, however two days ago the Military swooped in armoured vehicles, sealed off the region of the Capital Male’ where Yamin was in a meeting with the Vice Speaker of the Parliament and took him into custody.
With guns to his head several hundreds of Military Officers intimidating the public to stay away; Yamin was forced into a Military tank by armed Military personals and taken to the isolated island of Aarah an island used by the President. Members of the Parliament currently under arrest including the Vice Speaker of the Majlis have their rights and freedom denied. Repeated attempts by Yamin’s Lawyer Azima Shukoor to meet him has been denied by the Military that is following each and every whim of President Nasheed.
The President in his weekly radio address given today stated that he intends to keep them in solitary confinement accusing them of attempting to overthrow him. Dissatisfaction against the President’s harsh treatment of his Political opponents are falling into deaf ears. Last night MP for the main opposition party DRP Ahmed Mahloof stated that Yamin is in grave danger with attempts made to poison him while in custody. Access to lawyers denied, the Military repeatedly disobeying the Court order to present Yamin to Court, Yamin’s well wishers and supporters are fearing for his life, specially after the President stated on national radio VOM that he will not release those arrested and the fate of others that he suspect to conspire against his Presidency will face the same demise.
There are growing dissatisfactions among the whole population against the dictatorial stance taken by the first multi-party elect President and the Military and Police arresting dozens everyday following his order is creating an atmosphere of danger and fear.
People are so frightened to express against the government, it is only the President’s own government officials and his supporters that are in the streets rioting and attacking not only MP’s but also the houses of Judges and Lawyers working for the Judiciary.
Repression of his opponents, holding them in solitary confinement, particularly opposition party leaders and MP’s hand in hand with his supporters on the street acting above the Law while the Police and the Military following the President’s every command; mean the safety and the security of the country is heavily compromised. The night Yamin was taken into solitary confinement yet again; the Police made 18 arrests of those people that dared to come out and just verbally oppose the arrest. Many civilians that expressed support for Yamin were not only arrested, but were attacked by the ruling party paramilitary groups causing them serious injuries and hospital admissions.
Poor helpless Maldivian people are frightened, and the ferocious persecutions and series of arrests by the Military and the Police at the behest of the President means no one dare to express how they feel about what is happening. Therefore the only people rioting and protesting in the streets of all the inhabited islands are the President’s own self-appointed officials and supporters. They scream and shout abuse ordering the Police and the Military to charge all the opposition Parliament members with corruption and dismiss all the Judges. The ruling party officials in a Press conference given in front of the nation on national TV they control stated that they are in the process of appointing their own Courts and Judges.
Even though the President and his supporters are provoking violence with continuous riots and attacks on opposition Parliament members, Judges working for the Judiciary and their premises; all the opposition leaders and MP’s are still staying quite too scared to come out, fearing for their own safety and the prospect of getting arrested and taken to solitary confinement.
