The US Human State Department for the first time in the nation’s history puts Maldives in their Human Trafficking Watch list according to a Daily Newspaper in the Maldives.
The Maldives currently have a President Alfalil Mohamed Nasheed who goes above and beyond to put a decorative façade for the benefit of the international communities; that all is well in the Maldives; hiding the truth about his secret Dictatorship. He is the only President who claims to have championed in granting freedom of expression, but still gets his supporters to stab journalists and order the Police to attack peaceful protestors leaving them bludgeoned and unconscious on the streets of the capital and elsewhere.
According to the news report that appeared in the local newspaper Miadhu Daily, the Maldives is added to the Human Trafficking Watch list for the first time.
Rape is rampant in the country, especially gang rape. Drug abuse, violent crimes committed with knives have become a daily culture rampant everywhere in the country. Preventive measures are impossible due to the absence of witness protection procedures, and failure to convict the perpetrators due to a Judicial system, that is totally disregarded by a President who releases those few criminals that get convicted as political tools and paramilitary forces to attack peaceful protesters, journalists and those that refuse his and his activists constant MDP membership purge to turn the whole country’s voting population into MDP members.
Inflation rates that has been rising constantly since Nasheed became the President combined with persecution of civil servants, sacking those perceived as non-loyal, and others suffering pay reduction means the women are left to step up and do something, with no status; prostitution is the only option left.
Women totally disregarded at the moment, and what little affirmative action taken on the female gender’s behalf by Former president Maumoon, completely destroyed, for example getting rid of Women’s Development Committees; getting rid of Gender Ministry; they are forced to win their daily bread through prostitution and do whatever they can to please the male population with earnings.
The capital Male’ therefore has become a hub, and centre stage for slavery and prostitution where desperate parents from the islands, send their young girls even though they know that these girls might be used for sexual gratification and as slaves. They are helpless and desperately need the food and some form of education for their children which they are unable to provide, but the perpetrators do provide up to some extent in return.
Having no balance and checks on the people that come to the country from the neighbouring countries mean, Pimps and Prostitution ring masters in neighbouring countries such as Sri Lanka, even India have invaded Maldives and had made little niche markets constituting of unofficial brothels and massage parlours.
Today; in the hundred percent Muslim country of Maldives where prostitution and illicit sexual relations are prohibited and punishable by Law, it has become the medium of survival for young girls and their desperate families from the 200 or so inhabited islands. All most all infra structure developments of the 200 or so inhabited islands in the 19 atolls have been put on hold by President Nasheed since the day he got sworn in. Access to basic needs, health care, education has become impossible in the far outreaching islands, therefore parents have no option but send their children to the Capital Male, where apart from some decent families in the capital, the woman of the house use these innocent young girls as slaves, the fathers, sons and other relatives of the families use them for sexual gratification.
The Minister for Human Resource according to Miadhu Newspaper stated that he does not take it seriously, as it is simply too much work for the MDP government of President Nasheed to research into how many prostitution rings exist, who runs it, and whether all the Chinese, Philippines and Thai women that has become a common race in the streets of the Capital are victims of trafficking.
Similarly he refuse to rob the families in the Capital Male’ of the luxury of having 21st century slaves delivered on their door step by desperate parents of girls from the islands as they serve the people of his island Male’ therefore we are not at all surprised by his cruel nonchalance..
The country Maldives at the moment is ruled by a very cunning man who tries to save his profile from harm especially in the international realms by trying to appear as a messiah and desperately engaging in endless tasks to improve his image outside as the Hollywood movie stars do by engaging in the most obvious and easiest, constant environmental crusades, certain fun runs or Guantanamo Bay so and so forth.
However the internal social, economic and political conditions over the past two years in the Maldives since he became the President have deteriorated like never before. Desperate parents from the inhabited islands, deprived of infra structure and public service developments since he came to power, now sells their daughters to the house holds in the capital, in return for a little bit of education, food and clothing. Whole extended families that depended on sole breadwinners employed in the Civil Service, since the government in their thousands took their jobs away are left at the mercy of a destitute system where social security, dole, and benefits are unheard of.
At least now we have reason to be thankful as, even though slowly; the truth is getting told, coming out about the secret dictatorship of Mohamed Nasheed and his MDP political appointees posted in every inhabited island of Maldives.
