Although marred by politically motivated violence, social unrest, economic suffering; we wish you all a Happy 26th July (Independence Day)

The Maldives Independence Day 26th July is here. I wish all fellow Maldivians a very Happy Independence Day and also pray that once again our lives soon become normal with rule of law, peace and security restored. The Political unrest a culture that we have to endure since the MDP and Nasheed came into the political scene and particularity after coming to power has become worse than ever. Recently our lives are affected by civil war conditions all over the country.
We have currently, a disabled Parliament with meetings disrupted by the ruling party members even after getting the Military to arrest a number of opposition MP’s. This means one of the main functioning body of democracy is disabled without its function. Similarly the President and the ruling party MDP’s lack of trust in the Judges and Lawyers in the Judiciary and continuous demonstration almost always leading to violence outside their premises mean the other most important power of democracy is disabled. The only functioning power, the Executive comprising of the President and the Ministers while giving a blind eye to the economic and social cost of their acts are still concentrating on keeping the political unrest they perpetrated alive; on getting more opposition MP’s arrested and finding out the quickest way to replace the Judges and Lawyers that work in the current Judiciary.
Violence and political unrest according to the Police and the Military is still significant and the Maldives people are not at all safe enough to presume their daily lives.
Political unrest is continuing because; the politically motivated and implemented acts of the Executive power in getting their activists engage in violence to gain momentum for their call on the resignation of certain members of the Judiciary and the opposition members in the Parliament; that will is still there. Property damages and attacks on opposition leaders and supporters, as long as it is implemented by state sponsored agents and the Police and the Military purposefully continuing to be a part of it means there will be no quick end to this. Therefore we have to be careful this Independence Day and how we celebrate it.
According to Haveeru Newspaper the Police ignored complaints and cases filed against the ruling party members while the opposition leaders and supporters get arrested persecuted on mere insignificant accusations made by people belonging to the ruling party. A good example is how a case of bribery filed by opposition MP Mahloof against Reeko Moosa Manik the Head of ruling party’s parliament group even though the evidence is there for the whole world to see; is left, ignored and unattended by the Maldives Police Service.
This Independence Day approached with the President declaring himself the Head of both the Police and the Military Force and both forces implementing a one man show that has petrified the very international communities that endorsed Nasheed, which means the internal conditions remain precarious and will remain so.
In addition to the political crisis that has destabilised us, people are rather reluctant to mark the Independence Day this year for another reason. That is; Maldives has become an unofficial protectorate of India with Indian Military taking control of the Maldives Security with their military radars controlled from the Indian soil installed all over the region we call Maldives. The day we call Independence Day marks an end to the Maldives status as a British Protectorate, however this Independence Day the fact that our neighbouring India has got control over protecting us means that the Independence and freedom of Maldives at the moment is once again questionable and flying the Maldives flag this Independence Day will be a questionable act.
Under a paranoid paralysed government that had disabled all the other main democratic powers; blames others over their mistakes; currently; our democratic institutions are fighting a battle of survival due to the President and his henchmen’s autocratic control over them. It will be difficult to conduct the usual Independence Day ceremonies and celebration and show the usual joy and happiness this day brings to us Maldivians.
Nevertheless on this day we pray that; the dragging political crisis will come to an end. We pray that the Military that yesterday claimed to have arrested nearly 200 people so far (within a matter of few weeks) will start giving more importance to becoming free and independent from the Clutches of Anni Nasheed and become fair once again. We pray that the social and economic crisis that are at the highest that the country have ever seen and ignored due to the Political unrest once again takes centre stage.
We pray that democracy and freedom gets restored and the transition that we went through heads towards success than failure. We pray that we become free of the Indian Military control and other dominion powers once again and be able to commemorate our next Independence Day with a feeling of freedom and happiness. Happy 26th July to all beloved Maldivians and specially to those that follow this blog. God Bless you all and our beautiful nation; grant you a life full of freedom, liberty and social justice..
