Each and every state asset in Maldives is up for grabs to pay for the morbidly obese government’s political appointees as well as fund their strengthening of power, and the Parliament need to stop Nasheed and gang on their track.

All the major airports, hospitals, many uninhabited islands, even primary schools have been sold so far, and the ruling party is adamant that they be allowed to sell whatever that is left of if any. The political appointments one would have thought will end after two years in power but no, government positions are awarded like birthday presents as rewards for joining the ruling party or for demonstration of loyalty by high profiles like today’s appointment of Dr Muhsin who failed to secure his seat in the Civil Service Commission.
One would have thought all the cash generated from the sales will lead to some kind of infra structure developments in the 202 inhabited islands of Maldives, or will lead to the President giving the jobs back to those thousands of civil servants whose jobs have been taken away or even will lead to reinstatement of the original salaries of the civil servants which were hugely reduced by the President. However as disadvantaged as ever civil servants continue to receive the meagre salaries that they get event though the MDP government said the reduction was temporary.
The cash this government receives through almost daily done sales of state assets are enriching the political appointees and unable to sustain the overflowing cash, some of the appointees are buying land from the most expensive cities on Earth the Maldives very own Capital Male’ as well as houses in places like the Capital City of United Kingdom, London.
The selling of state assets en masse to fund the salaries of the bloated amount of political appointees and fatten their bank balances are passed as an economic policy. As we have seen in the case of Cable and Wireless how the money from the sales was used to win the Parliamentary seats, other than paying the salaries and buying land and homes everywhere in the world the money is also used to gain votes for the party in the different elections, of which the Council Election at the moment is imminent. Securing power for activists already getting paid as island Councillors and atoll Councillors, all of them politically appointed is the main way loyalists from the outreach islands and atolls are kept happy, therefore some money from the sales will be spared to spend for the election.
Everything in Maldives under MDP and Mohamed Nasheed’s presidency is up for grabs. Whatever we owned and had generated income for the people, it’s all up for grabs and they are getting sold under market value on first come first serve basis, instead of waiting for the highest bidder to earn quick cash; for the sole reason of getting the loyalist cronies enriched and paid while at the same time pay for arrangements needed to secure power for another term. The Councillor appointed to Head the Capital island has so far within a matter of two years bought two pieces of land valued at millions and millions from Male’ the Capital island which is the most expensive and crowded piece of land in the world. In addition to that the man himself as the Head of the Capital is selling every spare piece of land in the Capital. We are talking about Male’ the Capital where there is hardly any place to live and where in one story houses thirty to fifty people live under one roof in the most crowded conditions.
Political appointees since Nasheed became the President after pledging to appoint the smallest government with fewest political appointees have become the biggest government in the history of Maldives consisting of most political appointees superseding nations like Obama’s US with 300 million population while our population is just 300 thousand. No wonder why these political appointees receive the major part of the budget and the high amount of salary they get paid means hundreds of millions are spent on salaries alone and most disturbing fact is the daily appointments of people who agree to join the MDP has still not stopped so far.
The government is so obsessed over selling everything and pocketing the money the Cabinet resigned in anger when the parliament took steps to scrutinise the sales and exercise some kind of control over it. Once again the parliament is trying to take steps to stop them and they are met by huge resistance from the President and his freshly appointed Attorney general and his administration of political appointees threatening to go above and beyond the Constitution to continue with the sales. All political appointees and friends of the President across the world the salaries they receive are about fifty times higher than those Maldivians that are in affluent civil service jobs. It is important the Parliament stop this President right in his track before he sells anything further and we the communities with a permanent freeze exercised on our services and development by this government of President Nasheed and MDP with you all the way.
